Meenkunnu Beach is one of the most scenic beaches located in the southern state of India, Kerala,
which is also globally renowned as the ‘God’s own country’ due to the endless natural beauty of the state. This pristine beach of Kerala is an extension of Payyambalam beach and is situated in Kannur district of Kerala. Meenkunu beach is located at a distance of about 10 km from the main town of Kannur and is placed in the village called Azhikode. The beach attracts the visitors with its long stretch of glittering golden sand and swaying coconut trees.

The name of this beach is derived from two Malayalam words, Meen and Kunnu. The literal meaning of ‘Meen’ is fish and ‘Kunnu’ is a small hill. Thus the name Meenkunu in total means hill of fish, which indicates the prominent fishing tradition of the villages adjoining the beach.

Since the Meenkunnu beach is more of a fishermen’s area and is practically isolated during the late evenings, a bit of a restrictive factor is attached to it, especially for women. An ideal short trip is perfect for enjoying this beach.

The beach is very less crowded compared to the other popular beaches of Kerala and is preferable sight for shooting scenes for films and music videos. Still, the beach attracts a considerable number of tourists because of its pristine beauty and tranquil surroundings. The beach involves a slow pace of lifestyle with a number of fishing hamlets dotted in the place.

The beach provides is an ideal destination for the one who are looking to get away from the crowded atmosphere of the regular beaches. Tourists visiting the Payyambalam beach often come to Meenkunu beach for a change of surroundings and to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this place. You will find very little people at this beach other than the fishermen from the adjacent villages. Thus, the beach is the beach gives you a perfect opportunity to forget all the worries of the world for some time and enjoy some blissful moments. Even though the Meenkunu beach is quite secluded than the other beaches of the state, one can easily reach this place by cabs, auto rickshaws and buses from the main town of Kannur. There are many other attractions close to this beach like the historic forts, temples and a snake park.

As the beach has not been facilitated with accommodation amenities, the best option to stay while on a trip to this beach is Kannur. Kannur has plenty of options for accommodation with several budget and luxurious hotels, lodges and resorts dotted along the town. The town also has few home stay facilities.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport to this beach is Karipur International Airport, situated in Kozhikode at a distance of about 95 km.

By Rail: The nearest railway station to this beach is Kannur Railway Station, located at a distance of about 12 km.

By Road: The beach is easily accessible from the bus stand in Kannur, at a distance of about 12 km. As the place has a very good network of roads, it also linked with various other major places in Kerala.
