Kerala is called as the “God’s Own Country’, as to the immense natural beauty and scenic locations of this place.
Since ages, the region has been a favorite destination for film-makers. Many Indian films along with few foreign ones have been shot at the beautiful locations of Kerala.  With the presence of naturally gifted locations, the state has become a favorite option for the film-makers, over the years. Some of the locations shot in the films have made the audience sit up and admire the captivating beauty of Kerala, in the theatres. A majority of these movie scenes have also helped in promotion and popularity of tourism in the state. In the coming future, several plans are being made to shoot at these fascinating locations in Kerala.

Three Popular Locations

Alleppey Backwaters
Alleppey or Alappuzha is one of the top tourist destinations in Kerala and also a popular location for film shooting. The place is mainly known for its serene backwaters, because of which, it is also called as the ‘Venice of the East’. The place is featured with an attractive meandering network of canals, which passes right through the center of the town. The serene and tranquil backwater of Alleppey is made even more popular by the beautiful houseboats cruising along the waters. These boats are leisurely designed to provide comfortable accommodation and the visitors can have a memorable experience by exploring the scenic landscapes of the place while cruising along the calm backwaters on these houseboats. The popular song ‘Jiya jale jaan jale’ from the Bollywood movie ‘Dil Se’ have been shot in the picturesque backwaters of Alleppey. The song features Bollywood actors, Shahrukh Khan and Preity Zinta and it has beautifully depicted the beauty of backwaters by expressing the love between the actors on a houseboat sequence.  

Munnar

Munnar is a beautiful hill station in Kerala, which comprises of breathtaking natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere, which not only makes it a popular destination among the tourists but also among the various film-makers. The hill station is placed at a height of about 6,000 ft in Idukki district of Kerala and is regarded as one of the top tourist destinations in the state. Munnar is featured with scenic valleys and mountains, diverse species of flora and fauna and also the long extended greenery of tea plantations. There is much more to explore in Munnar, which makes it a hotspot among the tourists and film makers. The romantic beauty of this place has been perfectly captured in the Bollywood movie, ‘Nishabd’, which starred the legend, Amitabh Bachchan and the then newcomer, Jiah Khan. Another recent Bollywood movie, ‘Chennai Express’, which was a blockbuster, have also been shot at this place. The movie was directed by Rohit Shetty, starring Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone. Many of the shots in the film were shot in Wagavara, Devikulam Lake, Kannimala and Meesapulimala, all of which are found in Munnar.

Athirappily
Athirappily is a stunning waterfall, located at an altitude of about 1,000 ft above sea level close to the Chalakudy River and Sholayar Ranges. This amazing water fall cascades down from a height of about 80 ft and has a width of about 330 ft. Due to the immense beauty of this waterfall; it has earned the title of being the ‘Niagara Falls of India’. It is set amidst the lush green surroundings and is a delightful sight to watch. A scene from the Bollywood movie, ‘Raavan’, which did not do well in the box office, was shot at this location. The only thing good about the movie is the camera work done by the team with the Athirappily falls in the background. The mesmerizing waterfall and the picture perfect hill were shot in a scene of the movie, which may have created a complexity even in the heart of the stunning actress, Aishwarya Rai Bacchan.
